Remember to write them down, make them visible, and check in on them often.  Break down and crystallize the actions you will take each month, or each quarter, to achieve them.  Holding yourself accountable begins with setting the bar for success.

The episode also includes a brief primer on the new tax law, and shares some of the changes we are making at the podcast this year.

Specifically, since this is an incredibly broad and deep question, how do we use the concept of Expected Value in business to make optimal choices over time?

Jashar and Dr. Mohammad define Expected Value, which will be an unfamiliar term for much of our audience, and also differentiate it from Implied Value.  Then, they attempt to apply these concepts to more complex business decisions, and see if they can glean any meaningful results.

  • What should you consider asking for in a negotiation outside of direct salary, and what is the value of those asks? Have you considered things like license fees, malpractice, ce credit, sick time, or vacation?

  • How can a bonus structure be used to reach mutual agreement?

This week, Jashar and Mohammad explore the answers to these questions, give a strategy for improving your negotiation skills, and generally dote over William Ury.

Ury discusses six skills that can elevate your negotiation game:

  1. Separating the people from the problem.
  2. Focusing on interests, not positions.
  3. Managing your emotions.
  4. Expressing appreciation.
  5. Putting a positive spin on your message.
  6. Escape the cycle of action and reaction.

There’s a lot to each of these, and we try to touch on them in some depth and explanation. Each takes practice and focus, but you can get there if you try.  I’m certainly still working on parts of all of them.

William Ury’s book, Getting to Yes, is a must read for anyone who wants to go deeper on these issues (and if you click that link you can buy it for yourself).  Also, we’re happy to go deeper on anything we talked about here on a future episode.

cost-curveIn this episode, the gang is snowed in!  Literally, a blizzard set in on the Seattle area and everyone has been stranded.  We closed our business for two days, which makes time a little tight given Jashar’s vacay starting on Thursday.

In the end, Jashar rolled solo on this one, but Dr. Mohommad is here in spirit.

An incredibly boring sounding topic made for a deep and rich episode, as Jashar set to work tackling the implications of understanding the true cost of doing business, with the help of two pages worth of show notes.

We answer our very first audience question and it’s a good one.  Thanks to Tom in Seattle for a great way to get into the topic of compensation, which of course is quite relevant to cost of DB.

Diving into the main topic, Jashar discusses the wide gap between perception and reality when it comes to cost.  He gives pointers on how to determine real cost of DB, and also explore the useful implications of that knowledge, most notably in principled negotiation with employees.

They also cover room rental rates, and end with several useful tips for reducing cost.

The homework?  Make a cost spreadsheet for your business and in one column, brainstorm ideas to reduce cost for each item, or for as many as are applicable.
